Heimlich Maneuver
When there is a mild obstruction inthe throat (where the person can still breathe), ask the person to cough it outand do not interfere.
If the obstruction cannot beremoved, have the person lie down and dial 119 immediately. Next, perform CPRon the person.
When there is a serious obstructionin the throat (where the person is unable to cough, talk, or breathe and whoselips are starting to turn black) .
Dial 119 immediately.
Perform the Heimlich maneuver.
Stand right behind the person, withthe knee of your front leg placed under the person’s crotch.
Make a fist (thumb side in) andplace it above the person’s belly button, and wrap your fist with the otherhand.
Squeeze hard (in an inward andupward motion) against the person’s stomach; squeeze quickly and repeat theprocess.
Pay attention to whether the personspits out the obstruction; continue to perform the Heimlich maneuver until theperson has spat out the obstruction or if the person becomes unconscious.
If the obstruction cannot beremoved and the person loses consciousness, stand back and place the person onthe ground (in supine position) quickly and carefully. Next, perform CPR on theperson. If the obstruction can be seen in the person’s oral cavity during CPR,try to remove it with your fingers.
Performing the Heimlich maneuver ononeself
First, try to cough out theobstruction. If you cannot do so and there is nobody there to help you, performthe Heimlich maneuver on yourself
Make a fist with your dominant handplace it right below the Processus xiphoideus(just above your navel)
Wrap your fist with the other handon top and squeeze inward and upward repeatedly
If the obstruction cannot be spatout, find a fixed object around the height of your waist (e.g., the back of achair); press the upper area of your belly button against the upper part of thechair strongly to help you spit out the obstruction.
Stay calm as panicking will onlycause you to lose oxygen even more quickly
